Understanding dysbiosis and microbiome restoration.
Plain-language information to help you have a better conversation with your practitioner. This page is educational and is not medical advice.
What is the gut microbiome?
The community of microbes that lives in your digestive tract. It varies from person to person and changes over time.
What is dysbiosis?
A term for a disruption in the balance of that microbial community. Your practitioner can explain whether and how it applies to you.
What is microbiome restoration?
A practitioner-led approach that aims to support a more balanced microbial community, measured with stool sequencing before and after.
What is donor matching?
Everyone’s gut microbiome is different. Older FMT used a one-size-fits-all approach: any screened donor for any patient. Novel Biome uses your first stool test to match you with a donor, using its own matching system, designed to find the best possible match for you.

Always through a licensed practitioner.
Novel Biome does not sell directly to patients.

Baseline stool test
If they agree, a stool sequencing test is usually the first step. Its results are also used to match you with a donor.
The protocol
Your practitioner may first recommend a short preparation step. Then the FMT runs for about three months, with product made for you by name from your matched donor.
Follow-up test
About one month after FMT ends, a second test lets your practitioner review how your microbiome has changed.

Common questions.
Can I order directly from Novel Biome?
No. Novel Biome supplies licensed practitioners only. Your practitioner decides whether the protocol is right for you and orders it on your behalf.
What does the stool test involve?
A home collection kit. The sample is sequenced by a microbiome laboratory and your practitioner receives the report. [verify: kit and turnaround details]
How is my donor chosen?
From your first stool test. Novel Biome’s own matching system uses your results to choose a donor from its pool of screened donors before your product is made. Every donor passes full safety screening first. Matching is not a diagnosis and does not promise a result. Your practitioner can explain what this means for you.
